Ford Foundation

This Ford Foundation video explains the challenges facing the 2020 Decennial Census and why it matters.

Required by the constitution. the census tells us about our nation — who we are, where we live, and what we’re learning. It is designed to empower the governed, granting us representation and political power based on the population of our communities. Census data serves as the basis of $800 billion in funding to state and local governments and it provides essential demographic information to businesses, researchers and government.

If we fail to properly count children in the 2020 Census, the consequences will be significant. Growing regions will lack fair political representation, and funding will drop for key services, including transportation, libraries, education and more.

This video packs a lot of information into four engaging minutes: from a look at the history and goals of the census, to why it matters, what could happen in 2020 and how you can get involved.
